Volunteering and community service allow participants to better understand a place and share experiences with local people while at the same time developing their sense of social responsibility. The rewards of these projects are tangible and often unexpected. Community service work helps building self-confidence through learning new skills and taking on new roles. Examples of service work undertaken by participants are building simple rural school facilities, teaching English to local children, helping build irrigation canals for local farmers, and building and planting vegetable gardens. Indier sees community service as a partnership and works with local people and non-government organizations to see where the needs are in a local community and how a community service project may best benefit the community. At the same time we are acutely aware of the potential benefits that service projects can have for participating students and we put a great deal of effort into developing students’ awareness of the importance of being of service to others.
